My Reflexology clients always leave my treatment room with the words: “drink an extra cup of water today” it's so important to make sure you stay on top of your hydration. According to the guidelines we need to drink at least 6-8 cups of fluid a day – that’s about 2 litres. You will need more water if you are playing sport and in the summer.
Why is this so important?
Removal of Waste Products:
Water is essential for the kidneys to filter waste products from the blood. These waste products, along with excess water, are excreted as urine. This process helps in maintaining the body's chemical balance and preventing the build-up of harmful substances.
Lubrication and Shock Absorption:
- Joint Lubrication: Water is a key component of synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions the joints. This fluid reduces friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement, helping to prevent wear and tear.
- Shock Absorption: Water also acts as a shock absorber, protecting delicate tissues and organs. For example, the brain is cushioned by cerebrospinal fluid, which is composed mostly of water, protecting it from impact and sudden movements.
Overall, adequate hydration is essential for maintaining these vital functions and supporting overall health.
Signs of dehydration:
- Thirst is an early sign indicating the body needs fluids.
- Feeling of a dry mouth and throat.
- Dark yellow urine.
- Skin may feel less elastic and appear dry.
- Feeling tired and slight headache.
